The sudden impact jerked me from my reverie.
My plan was to exit St. Arbuck's parking lot but a silver Camry,
backing out of its parking spot, put a sudden stop to that.
Shocking.
Stunned, I got out of the car to check the damage and
a man with a bulbous nose said, "I looked both ways but I didn't see you."
Accident-free for the last 50 years, I wasn't sure what to do.
"Are you going to file a report?" said the lady who'd come out of the coffee shop.
I have to make one...for our liability. Are you injured?"
No.
She left us standing there looking at each other.
She left us standing there looking at each other.
We exchanged insurance information and the man said,
"Well, I guess I'll go home and call my insurance company and find out what to do.
Sorry about that."
Sorry about that."
We left the scene.
I was shaking like a leaf, irritated by the inconvenience, and, worst of all,
our lovely new red Prius had been wounded.
I cried, canceled appointments, and waited for the phone to ring.
I cried, canceled appointments, and waited for the phone to ring.
I hadn't caused the accident.
But now I had to prove it.
Three days of phone calls, emails, estimates, and interviews about what happened.
Hoping it wouldn't cost me anything.
Hoping it wouldn't cost me anything.
Then, yesterday, sweet relief from the other driver's insurance company.
They'd accept the liability, pay for the repairs,
and supply us with a rental car while the Prius is repaired.
And the work will be done in time for us to move north for the summer.
I'll get over it.
However, I'll drive ever more defensively
and, with gratitude, remember the close calls from which I've escaped.

I am so sorry, Becky. Are you stiff or sore now?
I love it when an insurance company does the right thing!
Fondly,
Glenda
Glenda, Thanks for asking. I've suffered no bodily injury, no stiffness. I was in my seatbelt :)
it happens in a second!...glad to hear that you are ok...sorry about the car!!!...A friend here was just killed in a head on with a chip truck....slush on the road pulled her into oncoming traffic....hitting a chip truck is everybody around here's worst nightmare...... scary stuff!....take care! Susan
Praise God you were not hurt, Becky!
How scary! Just reminds us how precious life is, and how things can change in a second.
Sending you a big hug.
xxoo
Safe travels back in your shiny red prius!
Thankfully it doesn't sound like you were injured. I know it's upsetting the car was though!
So quickly life can change. Thankful no one was injured. Blessings.
It was frightening and frustrating, but most importantly you are okay Becky.
it was a perfectly lovely early, very early morning.
i had the cutest little white dodge dakota sport pick up.
i had just taken some things to the back of the huge empty parking lot of target, to the recycling bins behind the store.
there was only one other vehicle in the mile wide parking lot.
i stepped on the gas and then leaned down to pick up a plastic container that fell off the seat... then i smacked into one of the concrete based light poles in the parking lot.
i did enough damage to have a generator and the a/c replaced, the fan and a bunch of other stuff.
the man in the other vehicle just sat there quietly staring at me with his mouth open. his eyes said it all... "unbelievable."
but like you... it broke a long wreck-free record and that's the part that hurt! well... that and having to tell the stupid story to the insurance company.
a comforting hug sent your way,
tammy j
i am so glad you are okay, friend... xo
Hello Becky.
No where tiresome - are you hurt - have been hit?
Hope you have crossed the shock - and that you are okay.
Wishing you a good Sunday.
Huge Hugs from Denmark.

Hi Becky!!!
Glad to hear you are OK.. but sorry to hear your little beast was wounded!!
Must have been nerve wracking waiting for that guy to get in touch again.. I think here we MUST call the police if it is over a certain value of damage.. Insurance would not come to the party if we didn't have the police report.. mind you I could be wrong.. I know i have been once in my life.. haha
Well.. take care and watch out for those bad drivers!! ciao xx Julie
In Ohio, I've been told to stay put until the police come even if the accident is blocking traffic. I remember once sitting at the side of the road with a woman from out of state in a friend's car who kept harping at me about how it was not her car and she didn't see me and where did I come from. I sat quietly THINKING, "You just busted up my brand new car and since I had to stop to turn left, there is no way you couldn't have seen me if you had truly been paying attention." She was entering the main road, turning left also and she ran right into my driver's side as I made my legal left turn onto the side road. Thank goodness the cop walked her away from me. We were allowed to move our cars once he got there and assessed the accident. Neither of us were injured and her friend's ins. co. paid for my car. I don't know how her 'hostess' felt about her visit after that!
So glad you're okay and the ins. part worked out so well. :>)
Fifty years without an accident? You are lucky! No harm here as well; and your status is still intact.
I despise that parking lot. I have a back way of cutting through Steinmart but that doesn't help with careless people backing out. So sorry about your car & awfully glad you are both ok.
PS - I have some fabric for you.
Car accidents are never fun. I'm glad you were not hurt and that the other party settled the matter.
PS Thank you for the comment! The viewpoint was my terrace :-)
So sorry to hear about the accident and glad that you're recovering from the hassle of sorting out the insurance. Thank the Lord that the other party had insurance and settled the liability. Also, that you are not injured.
I've been away from blogging - taking an eyesight rest from the computer etc. and hope to be back soon, so thanks for your kind enquiry.
So glad you are alright Becky...I know that feeling. It is paralysing and unsettling and scary, especially when it comes out of nowhere. You are so lucky he was there to share details. I am relieved that they are looking after you and your car. Once it is home, it will be time to let go.. Wishing you well Becky...
Jeanne xx
I can tell you, you cannot be too careful. Accidents happen so quickly. Glad no one was hurt.
Glad you're okay! I can't believe it's time for you to go back up north, already... although it does feel like summer here, too soon :(
Becky, Thank you for stopping by my blog to comment about Donna. She did well today in surgery and is resting overnight in the hospital. We are hoping for a speedy recovery and then we'll be there to help her during radiation and chemo treatments. She's a great person! I can see why she would follow your blog..it's so fun and cheery and she's an artist herself and would appreciate what you share here. Thanks again!
Hello Becky
Just inside to wish you a good weekend.
Hope that your car has been fixed.
Hugs Hanne Bente
